#PPF Mad Hatter Painting

If I’m honest, the mad hatter as a character never pushed any of my  buttons. I like insanity if it’s presented in a quieter, wittier, okay, less deranged way.

The Mad Hatter kinda spooked me in the Disney cartoon version of Alice in Wonderland which was my first experience of Wonderland. Later in high school I read Lewis Carroll and liked the story even more but the mad hatter still didn’t seem for me.

It took Tim Burton and Johnny Depp to make the Mad Hatter interesting to me. (And honestly of that duo doesn’t have the power to make someone interesting to me than no one does.)

I did not want to paint the Tim Burton/Johnny Depp version of the Mad Hatter but I did want a mad hatter that I could love just as much. I came up with this:

Mad Hatter

If he reminds you of a song about a babe with the power than you’re my kind of people. If not then he’s original and straight out of my head. I’m not sure if I will work into him more. My husband says to leave him and I like him so maybe I’ll just do other versions of him. I’m sharing this with Paint Party Friday as my thing I painted this week.

Please go there too and check out other awesome artwork.

And I’m also sharing this movie clip with you all in just in case. 🙂

Alice, a mermaid and Poseidon,oh my!

I have been working on several projects lately. I had intended to focus solely on the Wonderland theme but my mom had surgery recently and she’s come to stay with us. It’s a little hard to have my canvas and paints out right now. It doesn’t bother me because I got Alice out of my system before my mom actually had surgery,I was able to finish her the day before, actually. And she was a painting I had been keen to work on and finish before going on to the Mad Hatter and White witch.

I’m still getting art time but I’m more focused on getting better at drawing from life (I’m not sharing these at this time,or maybe ever) and also doing some watercolor work. I stumbled upon this mermaid that I had drawn for a Summer of Color challenge last year…or the year before, not really sure. I decided that I wanted to add color to her and this is her now:

I’ve been wanting to try participating in Illustration Friday and I noticed this week’s theme was beards. Who better to draw a beard for than Poseidon? (My husband walked by pre-color and thought I was drawing a shirtless Santa so okay, there are other options when illustrating beards but Poseidon was my choice. My Siren needed a daddy…or something.

I’m thinking of working on a mermaid on canvas series in the future, right after my Wonderland canvases are done,of course. Or maybe during? Sometimes you have to let paint dry afterall. 🙂

I’m submitting the mermaid and Alice for Paint Party Friday

and the bearded Poseidon for Illustration Friday.

My Red Queen amid Interruptions

I haven’t gotten much done this week in the way of painting. My mother has been in town all week and although I like spending time with her,it’s kind of impossible to get any artwork done when she is here.

I know this because I tried to sneak some painting in on Tuesday and I ended up losing the translucent quality to my Red Queen’s face that I really liked. My mom had been in the shower but she came out just as I was mixing the flesh tones on the face and well…I do not paint well in front of others. (Especially when those others start telling me stories about how they used to go to a certain park with their younger sister and how she’d like to visit with her before leaving town, hint, hint.) Oh well.

I kid-I mean that is a true story. I did have to say yes, we can probably do that later I ‘d just like to use this color I’ve mixed up before it dries. My mom did end up sitting on the couch to wait and cleared her throat several times letting me know she was waiting…but she’s older and it’s kind of her prerogative for putting up with me during my teenage years. (I was pretty high strung,overly-sensitive and okay, awful if I’m being honest.)

Here’s my queen and I think she’s finished. I’m tempted to mess with the background to make it lighter again but I’m stepping away (for)now.

BLOODY ROSESI want to put her in a local gallery exhibit that will be showing next month called Seeing Red. I know she’s more illustration-esque than gallery-ish but I’d like to show her anyway. If I get to finish an Alice to go with her I might show her as well. I’m planning to get lots and lots of painting done next week.(Knock on wood.)

*Update:I did end up putting her in the local exhibit and she sold! This is the first time I’ve ever sold my art and I was surprised, thrilled and a little tiny bit sad she wouldn’t be coming home with me,lol. I hear this is normal for a first sale though. I plan on painting another Red Queen but in a different pose, soon.:)

I also wanted to share the ACEOs I had started that led to this painting. As you can see I need to finish my Queen.:) I’m participating in PAint Party Friday again. (This is a very late entry I know, but I love this linky!) 🙂

Second Update: This ACEO card is now finished and available for sale in my Etsy store.:) (Close up below.)

Red Queen ACEO

Red Queen ACEO

Seeing Red

My  project this week has been my take on the Red Queen. It’s spun off from an ACEO series of Wonderland that I started first. I drew  Alice with her cat,  Dinah and the White Rabbit in the background for the first card I did and then I started on my Red Queen. My plans are to finish this one and then go on to do the White Queen and the Mad Hatter. As soon as I drew her out however, I realized that I really wanted to do something different with her and also make her larger.I’ve always had a soft spot for this lady for some reason.

It’s not ideal to start with a change in your ideas and then go back to your original train of thought.(Why do I do that so often?)

When I first drew out my queen for the ACEO she had big hair. For this painting I traded her big hair in for a hair covering instead.

And then applied heavy white paint in order to block out the red background.

And then wanted her to have hair similar to the card image I had done first of all. (Ugh)

I definitely like her hair now better than I liked the head covering but there’s a white outline that keeps poking through so I’ll have to keep fiddling with that to get it right. (My husband mentioned the hair needs more dimension anyway so I do think with a little gesso and more paint it should be okay….(I hope!)

There’s a lot more work that I want to do with the way the hair falls in front and with the background still but here’s my Red Queen so far.

Happy Paint Party Friday!

A lot of pictures..I mean an art journal update

If there’s an area where  I need more improvement in,other than getting myself to paint everyday,it’s posting on a more regular basis. I’m just not getting it into my routine yet..but I’ll get better.

I’ve been adding to my art journal everyday in some way,but some days I am working on the same spread. It depends on how much time I have to paint that day and sometimes it’s not a lot. That’s okay I just want to get into the habit of doing something. Something, for someone like me, is good.

Tomorrow is February the first and I’ve decided to participate in the 29 faces challenge again.

I’ve done this once before and I liked it so much!  I’m extremely  happy I thought to check when the next one would be happening before I missed it. (I think these challenges might happen twice a year at the same time every year..and I will double check that, but I couldn’t remember when those times were.

Thank goodness for lucky happenstance. Anyway, art journal updates:

I started this in December but I didn't like it and abandoned it.

I started this in December but I didn’t like it and abandoned it.

I don't absolutely love it but I like it better.

I don’t absolutely love it but I like it better.

The words say:

And when birds flew by

She always stopped to watch them,

Both to enjoy their grace

to feel the piece of her soul that rose

up and pressed against her body,

the part of her

that longed to follow them.

It’s a work in progress that I wanted to jot down before I lost the idea behind it. Again not perfect but…

Something to remind myself

Something to remind myself

I worked on this yesterday, the day before that and today:

art journal 29 023

I’m so tempted to turn her into a mermaid that I might just do that…

There is no reason that this took so long other than we had a lot of errands to run this week and it’s just been an off week in general. The little drawings were from a small notebook I carry with me. I made these sketches when I was thinking of doing another nude but I lost interest in the idea. The front sketch is not in proper form but I wanted to include it anyway and another sketch is on the other side of the notebook paper that I included as well.

art journal 29 021The words here are,”Dream:I want to live near the ocean one day.” (A dream I’ve had since the first time I stepped foot in the ocean.I was ten or something. Sigh. Maybe one day?)

There is one more two page spread that I want to share but that I’m hoping to get better pictures of . It’s one of my favorites so far. And there is another one that I’ll share later as well, that is probably my least favorite so far.

This book is about trying new things and those things aren’t always going to work,so it’s okay.

29 faces..starting tomorrow! I’m so excited to begin.

Love Note to Frida

For now I’m still working in my art journals. My husband keeps asking me when I’m going to work on canvas again or work on something that I might try selling…but I’m just not in that mindset yet. I’m still figuring out who I am I guess, my style.

The last canvas I tried mixed media on still sits unfinished because this kind of thing is more interesting to me right now. It’s also mixed media but very different from the canvas I abandoned.

I was listening to the Man vs Art podcast as I was about to start doing dishes and it was about Frida.I found the podcast this morning and I’m loving it. This particular podcast was very interesting to me. I did know a lot of what was being talked about but I was still really enjoying myself. All of a sudden  I had to start working on a 5 x 7 art journal card. (Damn the Dishes,I was feeling inspired.)

As I worked on the journal card I decided that I wanted it to be part of something larger so I taped it into my current art journal. I added the fabric bits, stickle glitter  and sequins;the heart was the last thing to be added besides the lettering.

I’m a huge fan of Frida as many people are- but I’ve not really tried to capture her before. This is just a portion of her but I do plan on drawing her image again for an atc swap soon.

The background is torn paper bag and torn…well writings of mine. (I’m doing that a lot these days.)

They are from Family Secret, to be exact. It is a book that I started last Nanowrimo in November. I tried to weave my  real family  ghost stories into a a fictional story where the main character’s mother finds peace with her sister’s disappearance which happened when they were younger. Yeah, if that description sounds long winded so was the story. 😉

I’m not saying I’ll never try writing on it again,it’s just that I’m not really using my writing muscle these days as much as I feel like I should be. Making art from my frustrations helps a little though.

Anyway. I am happy with these pages. They are something that I get pleasure from.

Is it hard for you to say you like your own stuff? Because it is hella hard for me to! I don’t know why it is it just is,lol.

My Life winebottle

I finally finished painting the second in the trio of wine bottles I’ve been wanting to finish.

You’ll notice I also found a photo editor on the kindle, this is good because the charger on my laptop is broken and I can’t get a new one yet.
I’ve been borrowing my husband’s computer lately but he eorks from home and I do all of my nano stuff on there. It’s tricky but it’s working for now.

Hopefully the blogging from the kindle, posting pictures thing works okay. I’m crossing fingers for sure!
This bottle is titled My Life and it is supposed to go with the Love bottle at the top. Next on the list is Loyalty and sealing these last two. 🙂

Sharing these at the friday paint party:
