The Virtues, or angels I’ve been painting lately

(I won’t even mention about being gone a while,I always feel like mentioning it will make me update more often…but it doesn’t. It’s like whenever I’m trying to lose weight and someone says that it looks like I’ve dropped a few pounds and I instantaneously gain five pound before I can either deflect the compliment or say thank you. Some things are just better let unsaid or unthought…or whatever.)

But anyway.

I started painting a fairy series during January and left them to start the stuff for the 80’s show. I imagined that I would pick up fairies again after I finished with that but ….I had a sudden urge to paint angels. The virtues or my take on the Virtues to be more specific.

Angel for broken heartsI painted this one first  and she’s a mixed media of collaged paper and acrylics. I call her angel of the broken hearts. Not sure I’m 100% happy with her face which was inspired by a very famous photo but that I’m just not sure about for now. Sometimes I just have to let things sit before I know what to do.

angel of GraceThis is my angel of Grace. Again she is made of collaged papers and acrylic and slightly based on a certain favorite actress of mine. I don’t like to say who because I’m a bit of a Frankenstein in that I will borrow eyes that I like from someone or a lip or a face shape, but I don’t like to base anything on someone completely and I try to work from memory as much as possible,it’s funner to see what I end up with that way. (But she may have had breakfast in a jewelry store once. )

Ariel, angel protector of animalsThis is my angel in progress. I’ve used no faces for inspiration at all on this one. She’s going to be my Ariel, angel of animals and nature and I have loads to do on her still. I find myself wanting to use watercolors again but I would really like to finish her before starting anything new!

Do you ever have trouble finishing an idea/project?

Our #1980’s themed #Art show

We recently had a  1980’s themed art show at our studio/gallery.

It has a lot of fun(can you imagine sharing 1980’s music and culture with two kids from this generation? They thought it was pretty rad.) but it was also a little stressful.80's show jonathan

I imagine all art shows are stressful but we only gave ourselves a little over three weeks to get a show’s worth of work done and to try and promote it. We will be having another themed show in the future but we will give ourselves a lot more time to get the work done for it!

Maybe two or three months.

My husband was able to paint twenty one paintings for the show and some of these were pretty big. I painted ten if you count my ACEO sized paintings too.

We have kids and it’s not like we can still stay up all night and still function like we used to do. So I thought everything turned out pretty good, considering.

We will have most of the art up all month but my husband plans to try and sell what doesn’t get bought locally online so not all of the pieces may make it for the entire month.(By month I mean until March the 19th.We tend to change out our paintings in time for our city’s art walk night.)

I plan to film our exhibit today so people not able to go to our gallery can enjoy it too. But for now I’ll share a video that Jonathan made of himself painting his  “Let’s Dance” David Bowie.

All in all I would call the show a success. We’ve had more people come to visit our gallery this month,I sold two of my 80’s themed ACEOs and Jonathan has already sold his Micheal Jackson painting,”Billie Jean” to a really awesome lady(and new friend). We have also had some interest in other paintings so hopefully our art will  find new homes that will love them.

We will be selling artwork through eBay for pieces that do not sell locally:

#29faces starts again today :) #Art

Today is February first and while others might have the super bowl or thoughts of Valentine’s Day approaching…I’m excited to start 29 faces again.:)

Because I did okay with 30 ACEO challenge and the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge last month but horribly at posting what I worked on-I will update about that soon.

This was my first face for February:

RED

It’s called Red and a tribute to Red Riding Hood.

I’m part of a selling ACEOs on Ebay  group on Facebook and we were challenged to make a card that portrayed our favorite childhood stories. I had many favorites growing up but for the challenge I went with Red.

I always thought she had a heck of a lot of spunk for a kid who’s grandma just got eaten by a wolf. (Just sayin.)

I’m having trouble making buttons show up on my sidebar for some reason but you can find out more about 29 faces and the artists taking part by clicking this one:

There is seriously a lot of awesome art up for grabs. 🙂

Bubble Pop Princess or a Painting of the kid’s toys

My kids always leave these cool little scenes from playing with their toys on our kitchen table or on the sofa …in the bath tub or in front of the front door. When I’m not annoyed that I just tripped over something(again) these scenes usually make me pause and smile. I finished painting such a scene earlier this month but never showed the finished product.

This is Bubble Pop Princess(which makes me think of Gwen Stefani for some reason?)

pop princess bubble girlShe is an 16 x 20 canvas, done in acrylics and she is currently hanging in our studio/gallery.

I noticed that the topic for Illustration Friday this week was toys and so I thought it might be the perfect time to share her. I may have taken more photos recently that I plan to paint in this style soon. 🙂 They’re a lot of fun to do!

David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust art

I was kind of a weird kid growing up.

Shocking, I know.

🙂

Because here’s the thing, when you’re raised in a household where the only music that you’re allowed to listen to is Gospel music and if you’re lucky Elvis singing Gospel music and then you’re grandma starts watching you after school and she lets you watch MTV to your little musically depraved heart’s content…well, stuff happens.

When I was a kid MTV still played music videos but those hours that I was at my grandma’s house they were playing older music videos. Because of this I developed a lifelong love affair with Pat Benatar and David Bowie. (Thank you Grandma Maria.

David Bowie was actually my first big crush. (I’ve said this a lot of times in a lot of places. There’s really no reason for me to keep saying it…it’s just that it annoys the heck out of my husband for some reason and that makes me giggle.)

ZIGGY STARDUST

I’ve made a Ziggy Stardust ACEO and it’s currently listed on ebay right now for the Nibblefest Auction contest. It’s a very cool thing where lots of talented phenomenal artists list their artwork in seven day listings starting at the price of  .99 ,whoever’s piece ends on the highest price wins the contest. They graciously let me play along.:)

This month’s theme was the third letter of your name and as mine is D my mind automatically went to David. (You should definitely check out all of the awesome listings!)

You can find David here and there’s a link on my listing that will take to to the other artwork that was created this month.

P.S- I have not been posting 30 paintings 30 days as I should be doing but this one counts towards that, okay?

30 paintings in 30 days,day 4

I’m not where I’m “supposed” to  be but I did manage to paint today..so that’s something. Right?

I’m going to say yes.

I worked on a painting that I’ve been trying to finish for a long time and I think it’s finally done now. I’d like to say that this image

bubble pop princess

is that painting finished but

I actually added to it a little bit more after I took this picture.

Sometimes it’s really hard to stop.

I also started and finished a small painting today:

go lucky bear

I had left over paint from the big painting and a small canvas that I bought in a pack to share with the girls.

It’s just a little cartoony bear but I like it okay. My youngest loves it so there’s that.:)

It’s an interesting time for me. We are trying to get things together for the studio space in town and we are running into a little bit of trouble with the electricity. It turns out that we need a permit for some reason. But we’ll call to sort it out tomorrow and I’m SURE IT’LL BE OKAY IN THE END.

It’s hard for us because we’ve had a week of being stuck in the house because of frozen streets and New Years eve has also meant that it was hard to talk to the people that we needed to talk to in order to get the ball rolling.

It’ll be okay- I’m finishing up paintings and Jon’s been working on a few new spectacular canvases. and putting all of my paintings together? It’s good seeing everything in one space like that. I’m hoping that it’ll encorgae me to keep painting and growing as an artist.

I’ll update as I can. 🙂

P.S- the girls go back to school tomorrow and that’s good in a way but I’m also freaking out a little because routines do that to me. Back to school means back to routine. Wish us luck.
